A quick and fun snack made from fresh apple slices decorated with cinnamon, honey, and various toppings. Perfect for kids and family gatherings, this recipe is simple, healthy, and customizable.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 34 medium-sized firm apples (such as Fuji, Honeycrisp, or Gala)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter or almond butter (optional)
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (walnuts, pecans, or almonds, optional)
  • 2 tablespoons sprinkles or mini chocolate chips (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons shredded coconut (optional)
  • Greek yogurt for dipping or topping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash and core the apples: Rinse 3-4 medium apples under cold water. Using a small knife or an apple corer, remove the core from each apple carefully, creating a donut-like ring. (Approx. 5 minutes)
  2. Slice the apples: Cut the cored apples into uniform slices about 1/2 inch thick. The slices should be sturdy enough to hold toppings but easy to bite through.
  3. Mix the cinnamon and honey: In a small bowl, combine 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon with 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup. Stir well to create a drizzle mixture.
  4. Drizzle the cinnamon-honey mixture: Lay the apple rings on a baking sheet or serving plate, then spoon the cinnamon-honey mixture evenly over each slice. You can also use a brush for an even coat.
  5. Add nut butter (optional): If using, spread a thin layer of peanut or almond butter onto each apple slice to add richness and help toppings stick.
  6. Sprinkle toppings: Let kids or yourself sprinkle on chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, shredded coconut, or sprinkles as desired. Add a dollop of Greek yogurt on the side for a cooler, creamier touch if desired.
  7. Serve immediately or chill: These apple fruit donuts are best fresh but can be refrigerated for up to 2 hours before serving.

Notes

To prevent apple slices from browning, soak them in lemon water (1 tablespoon lemon juice per cup of water) for 3-5 minutes before coring and slicing. For a warm variation, gently warm apple slices in a 350°F oven for 5 minutes before adding toppings. Store leftovers in an airtight container with parchment paper between layers and refrigerate up to 2 days. Best served fresh for crispness.
