A fun and colorful bread recipe that combines vibrant gel food coloring with a soft, slightly sweet vanilla-flavored dough. Perfect for family baking fun and creating memorable moments.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups (480 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 2 ยผ teaspoons (1 packet) active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 ยฝ cups (360 ml) warm water (about 110ยฐF/43ยฐC)
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 ยฝ teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Gel food coloring (6 colors, about ยฝ teaspoon each)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 ยฝ cups warm water (about 110ยฐF/43ยฐC) with 3 tablespoons sugar and 2 ยผ teaspoons active dry yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy and bubbly.
  2. Mix the dough base: Add 3 tablespoons melted unsalted butter, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1 ยฝ teaspoons salt to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
  3. Add the flour: Gradually mix in about 4 cups (480 grams) all-purpose flour, one cup at a time, stirring until the dough starts coming together and pulls away from the bowl sides.
  4. Knead the dough: Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic, or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 6-7 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough: Divide the dough evenly into 6 small balls (about 150 grams / 5.3 oz each) and place each in separate small bowls.
  6. Color the dough: Add about ยฝ teaspoon gel food coloring to each dough portion and knead gently until color is evenly distributed without overmixing.
  7. Layer the colored dough: Lightly grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan. Flatten each colored dough ball into a rough rectangle about ยฝ inch thick. Layer the dough pieces one on top of the other in the pan, alternating colors without pressing too hard.
  8. Final rise: Cover the loaf pan with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel and let rise in a warm spot for 45-60 minutes until nearly doubled and just above the pan edges.
  9. Bake the bread: Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Bake the loaf for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped. Tent with foil if browning too quickly.
  10. Cool and slice: Let the loaf cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
