An easy and elegant breakfast recipe featuring toasted bagels topped with cream cheese, smoked salmon, and fresh toppings for a quick yet sophisticated start to your day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 fresh bagels, preferably everything or plain, sliced in half
  • 6 oz (170 g) thinly sliced smoked salmon
  • 4 oz (115 g) full-fat cream cheese, softened
  • ¼ cup thinly sliced red onion
  • 1 tablespoon capers, drained
  • A few sprigs fresh dill, roughly chopped (optional)
  • 1 lemon wedge, for squeezing
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • Optional extras: sliced cucumber, tomato, or everything bagel seasoning

Instructions

  1. Slice your bagels in half and toast them until golden and crisp on the edges but still tender inside—about 3-4 minutes in a toaster or 6-7 minutes in a toaster oven at 350°F (175°C).
  2. While the bagels toast, thinly slice the red onion and chop the fresh dill if using. Drain the capers and keep them ready.
  3. Spread about 2 tablespoons (30 g) of softened cream cheese evenly over each bagel half.
  4. Arrange 3 oz (85 g) of smoked salmon slices on each bagel half, fanning them out for even coverage.
  5. Sprinkle the sliced onions and capers over the salmon. Scatter dill lightly on top if using.
  6. Finish with freshly ground black pepper and a gentle squeeze of lemon juice over each bagel half.
  7. Serve immediately while the bagel is still warm and the cream cheese soft.

Notes

Use softened cream cheese for easy spreading. Toast bagels to a slight crunch but keep them soft inside. Thinly slice smoked salmon and onions for best texture. Fresh lemon juice brightens the flavors. Variations include using dairy-free cream cheese or gluten-free bagels. Avoid over-toasting to prevent dryness.
