  • Vanilla extract โ€“ 1 teaspoon
  • Heavy cream or milk โ€“ 2-3 tablespoons (30-45 ml)
  • Black food coloring gel โ€“ small amount

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Line your muffin tin with cupcake liners or lightly grease it.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar using an electric mixer on medium speed for 3-4 minutes until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time to the butter mixture, beating well after each addition.
  5. Mix in the vanilla extract.
  6. Alternate adding the dry ingredients and milk to the wet mixture, starting and ending with the dry mix. Mix on low speed just until combined after each addition.
  7. Divide the batter evenly among the 12 cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
  8. Bake for 18-22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove cupcakes from the oven and let them cool in the tin for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  10. While cupcakes cool, prepare the buttercream frosting by beating softened butter on medium speed until smooth (about 2 minutes).
  11. Gradually add powdered sugar, mixing on low to avoid a sugar cloud.
  12. Add vanilla and 2 tablespoons of heavy cream. Beat on high for 3-4 minutes until fluffy and spreadable. Adjust texture with more cream or sugar as needed.
  13. Divide the buttercream, reserving a small portion to tint with black food coloring gel for the mustaches.
  14. Fill a piping bag fitted with a small round tip with the black frosting and pipe whimsical mustaches onto each cupcake.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for best results. Avoid overmixing batter to keep cupcakes light and fluffy. Use gel food coloring for vibrant black frosting. Pipe mustaches just before serving for freshest look. If black frosting is too runny, chill for 10-15 minutes before piping. Practice piping on parchment paper to perfect shapes.
